Matt Marsh -
FirstHand Experience
Matt Marsh is a user-centred design specialist. His creative business consultancy, firsthand, was set up to ensure that the development of new products, services and policies are designed around the needs of the end-user. At firsthand we call this process our people-shapedTM approach to innovation.
Prior to setting up firsthand, Matt headed up the human factors design research department at IDEO in San Francisco before becoming Marketing Director and Studio Leader of their product development team in London.
With a wide range of design experience in many fields including transportation, healthcare, government, technology and telecommunication sectors, Matt has created award-winning customer-centred services, products, software, systems and environments. He has been a user-centred design and innovation envoy at the Design Council and is a co-opted member of the Ergonomics Society Professional Affairs board. He has recently become visiting professor at Ravensbourne College of Art and Design in South London.
firsthand's offer extends to user-centred strategy, interdisciplinary program management, end-user participation programmes, user needs research, experience prototyping and supplies other human factors expertise to projects. Recent clients to benefit from firsthand's input on major and pan-international projects include Samsung, BBC, BMW, Brother, Channel 4, CAF (Charities Aid Foundation), Maverick TV, Nokia, Pfizer, Plastic Logic and Reuters.

This was a great brief that allowed people to try lots of different things. The overall standard was very high. Some great presentations, good research and some very clever ideas. Hopefully our shortlist celebrated all the right things about what is going on in product design today! The winners met the brief in clever and informative ways.
