Student Awards 2009

The Juries

Malika Favre -
Airside

Malika has a Graphic Design degree from Olivier de Serres in Paris and a BA in Digital Media from the Surrey Institute, but everybody knows her burning passion is for illustration.

She came to Airside in summer 2008 after working one year at unit9 as a Junior Designer, and loves it very much. She worked on the BAFTA nominated ‘No.1 Ladies Detective’ titles as a designer/director in 2008 and that remains her favourite project so far. She is judging the D&AD Student Awards for the first time.

The brief was good, well written and very exciting. A challenging animation project... I feel some humour could have been introduced as well to set the tone and widen the boundaries. A lot of the animations submitted were taking the brief very literally and not pushing it far enough. There was a lack of humour and imagination. I was expecting more fun, quirky and irreverant animations... a lot of students missed the target audience and it felt aimed at 6-8 more than 8-14. The ‘needle and thread’ piece was my favourite – everything was well-crafted, well put together and the music was great. Beautiful visuals. It took me by surprise, with a very intriguing atmosphere. The 'flat girl' and toy house also showed great animation and drawing skills, with an amazing sound track!
